PSA 101 - Basic Process Service

This course will introduce you to the world of the professional process server, and will provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of the rules and laws that govern the profession. It will help prepare you to become a professional process server.

Texas law requires a person to attend an approved training course before being Certified as a process server by the Supreme Court of Texas. Although you do not need to be certified to become a process server, many counties also require similar training before permitting you to serve legal papers out of the District, County, or Justice of the Peace courts in those counties.

We have made application to the Texas Process Service Review Board, and expect our courses to be officially sanctioned. Once we are approved, it will mean that students who successfully pass a course at PS-Academy will receive a Certificate of Proficiency that can accompany their application to the Texas Supreme Court to become a Certified Process Server.

If you are also a licensed private investigator, PSA-101 has been approved for 10 (ten) hours of Continuing Education credit by the Texas Private Security Bureau, which will be awarded upon your successful completion of the course.

Students who successfully complete one of our courses are entitled to these other items we also have to offer (not available to the general public):

  • 2005 Process Servers Handbook ($15.00), a handy reference guide that includes all the rules and laws a Texas process server needs to know;

  • Forms for the Office ($5.00, on CD or 3.5" disc), with a variety of business and legal forms that every new business needs;

  • translations in Spanish and Vietnamese ($5.00, on CD or 3.5" disc, or Free with the purchase of both of the above), English words and phrases a process server would typically use when serving process, translated into each of these languages, with pronunciation guides.

PSA-101 is intended to give you, the student -

1) an historical background of customs and laws that gave rise to serving process;

2) definitions of legal terms that process servers should know;

3) information about who can, and who can't become a process server;

4) what a process server can do, must do, and can't do;

5) intensive review of Texas and federal laws that govern service of process;

6) practical applications to consider when serving legal papers.

PSA-101 is divided into six separate modules:

How is the course administered?

The course is available only online at PS-Academy.org. A student must enroll, pay the course tuition, and log in each time he or she continues with the course. The student is not allowed to download or print any section of the course, or any test or exam. The student has 14-days within which to take the entire course and pass the final exam. Each module is given in the order shown above, and the student can proceed at his or her own pace. An average person could take the entire course during a single uninterrupted session of 10-hours.

How will I be tested?

Each of the six modules ends with a short test that consists of five questions (multiple choice, and true & false). The student must correctly answer 4 of the 5 questions before being able to move on to the next module. If the student does not answer 4 questions correctly, he or she will be given an opportunity to go back and review the contents of that section, and take the test again. A total of two opportunities will be given to PASS each module. The student must pass 4 modules out of 6 before being permitted to take the Final Exam. If the student does not pass 4 modules, a FAIL score is given, and no certificate of completion is bestowed.

When the student has completed taking tests in all six modules, and has received a PASS score in 4 of them, then the Final Exam is administered. The Final Exam consists of 50 questions (multiple choice, and true & false).

If a student receives PASS in all 6 tests, he or she must achieve a minimum score of 70% on the Final Exam to PASS the course.  If a student receives a PASS in only 5 tests, he or she must achieve a minimum score of 75% on the Final Exam to PASS the course.  If the student receives a PASS in only 4 tests, he or she must achieve a score of 80% on the Final Exam to PASS the course.  If the student FAILs the Final Exam after the first attempt, he or she will be given an opportunity to go back and review the entire course, after which you may take the Final Exam again. You will have a total of two opportunities to PASS the Final Exam. All of this must be done within the 14-day time limit.

Do I need to take the whole course at one time?

No. You can take the course at your own pace, logging on or off at any time. As long as you complete the course, and PASS the Final Exam within 14-days after signing up, you're on your own.

What is the time limit to take the course?

You'll have 14-days to take the course, after which time the course time limit will expire. All modules of the course must be taken, all tests must be taken, and the final exam must be passed within that 14-day period of time. If the student does not finish all the requirements within that time limit, the course will "end", no score will be given, and no certificate of completion will be issued.

Is a "student record" kept by PS-Academy?

Information pertaining to the status of each course a student signs up for will be included in the student's permanent record at PS-Academy. It may be sent to the Supreme Court of Texas, but it is primarily for your records, as well as to help us audit our internal procedures. Once you take a course and successfully PASS it, that information will be noted in your permanent record, and a certificate of completion will be issued. Prior attempts to obtain a PASS in any course are NOT considered part of the scoring process. You can print your student record to obtain a hard copy of it for your records.

What happens after I PASS the Final Exam?

After you receive a passing score, you will have successfully completed the Course. We are automatically notified, and will send you a CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY by US mail. The CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY will verify that you successfully completed the course, and will include the original signature of the instructor, and embossed with the seal of PS-ACADEMY to validate the Certificate. You will be provided with two original certificates. One you will need to send to the Texas Process Servers Review Board at the Supreme Court of Texas. The other one is for your files. Just as you would have to pay a registrar's office in any other academic institution a fee for additional transcripts, we also assess a fee of $5.00 for each additional original certificate you request.
